Dear Valued Client:
The Orange Chair
Happy Birthday Strategic Connections Inc.!
Yesterday we reached one of those milestones in business that has some degree of significant meaning - it was our 10th anniversary since incorporating back in 1998. So much has happened over these past 10 years I find it at times hard to believe.
I remember when I founded the company I came up with the tag line 'engaging people…boosting performance'. The reaction of friends and clients and prospects was amazing. No one else seemingly was using talking about engaging employees - today if you are not focused on engaging your people you are clearly out of step with what your competition is doing - and the results you face going forward may well prove to be less than you had anticipated.
I started the Strategic Connections because I believed that everyone gets up each day and heads off to work with the belief and hope that they can and will contribute in a positive and meaningful manner at a workplace that treats them as a person and with respect. 10 years later I believe this to still be the case.
Finally I recall conversations with colleagues and clients exploring what was happening in the world of work and how shifts in social and economic structures and networks were reshaping businesses and workplace cultures. Of more significance perhaps was our thinking of how advances in technology were going to impact the "what's and how's" of the workplace. We discussed the impact that things like the intranet and collaborative technologies would have on work processes, organizational structures and what have you and how the traditional hierarchy and all it meant would be challenged by something much different. This idea was named "Wirearchy" by my good friend and thought leader Jon Husband in reference to how each and every person would be interconnected through technology.
For me the shift in the world of work led to a focus on two areas in particular - a required shift for leadership from command and control to champion and challenge and internal communications strategies, processes and function.
Over the past 10 years we have accomplished a great deal I believe: The company has grown; our thinking has developed immensely; we learn and apply our learnings each day; we share our knowledge openly; our voice has been heard; our website has served as a solid resource centre for people around the globe. But most importantly we have met and had the chance to meet and work with clients around the world - and in all cases help them to achieve their goals and objectives in building workplaces that truly engage those who work with them.
Moving Ahead in 2008
Looking forward I believe that 2008 will be a year for you to remember when it comes to Strategic Connections.
You will see continued improvements to our website as we work to grow its reputation as one of the very best places to get information associated with employee engagement, change management and strategic internal communications without having to have a paid membership.
While continuing to assist people around the world through the information we offer on the site (and encourage them to ask for if it is not there!) we will focus our attention on the market we know best and love so much - Canada. Our plans to be out and about in our country are shaping up nicely with speaking engagements booked and planned coast to coast. We are also taking a very close look at opening offices in at least two other cities.
The Storytellers program we secured the Canadian license for last year will continue to be a huge focus for us. Our belief is that our clients - current and future - will quickly come to see how the many and clear benefits of this program will help them in achieving the levels of engagement and competitive advantage they seek. As well, our communications and engagement consulting and our training programs will be expanded to meet the growing needs of our clients. And of course there is our blog which we will work to enhance on a continuous basis.
It is clearly going to be a fun year!
Tell us what you want!
Most importantly I want to thank each of you for subscribing to our newsletter. Many of you have been receiving our newsletter since 1999 when I first launched it - many others have only been subscribers for a few years. To each of you a reminder - we publish this newsletter for you - please drop us a note whenever you can to say hello, make suggestions for improvements, content ideas or to ask our advice on an issue you are challenged with. We love to hear from you and do all we can to ensure that what gets covered in our articles is what is of interest to those who matter most - you.
All the best for 2008 - may it be full of many rewards and much happiness.
